Lead Youth Support Advocate

Foster Care and Family Services - New Bedford, MA - Part Time

Position Description:

Under the leadership of the Program Supervisor. The Lead Youth Support Advocate (LYSA) are responsible for the supervision of the children utilizing the emergency shelter who are under the care of Department of Children and Families (DCF). The LYSA are responsible for planning and implementing the identified services needed to assist the children at the emergency shelter. The LYSA will uphold all duties and expectations of a Youth Support Advocate as well as provide support and mentorship to all team members.

Schedule:
Thursday 5 pm - 1 am
Friday 5 pm - 1 am
Saturday 9 am - 9 pm

Qualifications:          

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent degree is required.
  • Human Services field or 2 years’ experience in a related field, preferred.
    • Residential Counselor, Day Hab Program, Direct Care Staff, Caregiver
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to document clearly and efficiently.
  • Ability to successfully complete trainings such as CPR, First Aid, and SafetyCare provided by KDC.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Ability to advise, influence, exercise good judgement, and make thoughtful decisions.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word functions.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Ability to successfully complete QBS SafetyCare Training provided by KDC.
  • Ability to assist individuals with developmental disabilities and/or limited mobility (such as lifting, transporting) if needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Models and supports the Kennedy-Donovan Center (KDC) and the Department of Children and Families (DCF) values, vision, and mission statements.
  • Maintain clear communication and reporting program needs with the Program Supervisor.
  • Assists the Program Supervisor with training strategies for new team members to attain and maintain expected program productivity.
  • Ensures that all shift needs, expectations, and operations are completed.
  • Assess individuals’ needs and develop safe and helping relationships with assigned children at the Emergency Shelter (ES).
  • Welcomes participants and conducts entrance orientation and paperwork.
  • Medication audit, management and documentation as needed.
  • Assist and facilitate activities of daily living (ADLs) such as household maintenance, personal-care and hygiene, food preparation, leisure activities and socialization skill development.
  • Act as a role model and provide a safe and nurturing environment for children and adolescents while helping them to gain sustainable skills that aid in their success in home, school, and the community.
  • Ensure safety and security of the program while on shift.
  • Conduct exit paperwork at a participant’s departure.
  • Perform any other duties that are assigned by the Program Supervisor.
  • Must attend mandatory staff meetings and training courses held by KDC and DCF.
  • Maintain individuals’ confidentiality and records while preserving individuals’ human rights.
